Exciting for all lovers of high-quality streaming formats and series: The "Streaming Wars" are entering a new phase with the launch of Apple TV+ planned for tomorrow and the announcement of the subscription costs and launch date of HBO Max. The offers, price levels and growth strategies of the new streaming providers differ significantly from each other. ;)
With currently the lowest subscription price of all streaming providers of only 4.99 Euro per month, Apple&s TV+ is focusing on a second streamer strategy. With the low subscription price, Apple TV + will establish itself in households that already have a contract with Netflix, Amazon and Co. The idea behind this is that the subscription price is still below the pain threshold of most households and is simply "taken along" as a high-quality supplement. Apple´s Strategy makes perfect sense - especially since Apple TV+ offers rather few but elaborately produced and partly top-class formats. As a "supplementary offer", it is not the many film titles that need to be selected, as with Netflix or Amazon, but the high-quality supplement. In addition, Apple is offering its streaming service for new Mac and iPhone buyers free of charge for the first year, which should quickly lead to high subscription figures. HBO MAX is to be launched in the USA in May 2020 for just under 15 dollars. HBO MAX thus positions itself quite differently from Apple TV+ and should not be satisfied with a role as a second streamer, but will replace existing streaming subscriptions. ;) And also this strategy is quite understandable in view of the available contents and cross-marketing possibilities of WarnerMedia. HBO has already proven with many series productions that they probably have the highest creative potential for worldwide successful series: Game of Thrones, True Detective, The Wire, Westworld are just a few examples here. If you look at the power relations of the big streaming players: Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, HBO Max, it becomes apparent that streaming pioneer Netflix has the least crossmarketing options.
